EDWARD MASON, JR.
Retired Compton Police Sergeant Edward Mason, Jr. passed away at Long Beach Memorial Hospital on Monday, April 23, 2007. Mason, who had been plagued by heart and other health problems for years, died following complications of a stroke suffered on Friday. He was 65.
Sergeant Mason, fondly known as Red, was born in the state of Mississippi and raised in the Los Angeles area and the city of Compton. He was a graduate of Centennial High School and attended Compton Community College.
Red began his law enforcement career with the Compton Police Department on January 1, 1972. He worked various assignments which included—but were not limited to—patrol, narcotics/vice, special investigations and homicide investigation. He was promoted to Police Sergeant on May 22, 1988 and made the transition to supervisor quite well. He was people oriented and his management style allowed him to make positive contributions to the Compton Police Department. He retired from the force on January 8, 1994.
He is survived by his wife, Debra, and four children. Kind memories of Red will forever remain in our hearts. Funeral services are pending
