Deputy Sheriff Jerry Ortiz Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department
End of Watch: Friday, June 24, 2005
Biographical InfoAge: 35
Tour of Duty: 15 yrs

Jerry was my partner and friend at Lakewood for the last year before I was transferred to the Compton Station several weeks ago. I am proud to say I served with Jerry and our hearts go out to his Wife, as Jerry was recently married several weeks ago, his two children and family.

I can't tell you the sick sad feelings were all going through as Jerry was tragicly Murdered by a coward!! He was a true Hero and will not be forgotten!!

Deputy Ortiz was shot and killed after knocking on a door during an investigation. Deputy Ortiz had gone to an apartment complex in the city of Hawaiian Gardens to question a woman about a shooting that had taken place the previous day. As he spoke to the woman at the door of the apartment, the suspect in the previous day's shooting appeared and shot him in the head. The man then fled into an apartment three doors away. Deputies found him hiding in a bathtub three hours later. The suspect, who was on parole and had prior arrests or convictions for assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, burglary, as well as for gun and drug crimes, was charged with first degree murder and faces the death penalty.

Six months prior to this incident, Deputy Ortiz's brother-in-law, Corrections Officer Manuel A. Gonzalez, of the California Department of Corrections, was stabbed to death by a gang member inmate at California Institution for Men in Chino.....Tim

Hello! my name is Maria, growing up in the 80's and in the city of Compton, was not very easy, I grew up in the east side of Compton, one block next toTucker St. My parents own a house there for 30 Years. In my teenage years I dated and Married my Boyfriend a troubled teen son of a single mother raised in the Willowbrook area, who was caught up in the gangs and drug dealing in the City of Compton exposed to all the gang violence, drug dealing and Drug use., Luckily he is still alive, was shot in the arm by a gang called Spook Town in 1989. But that was an Eye opener for him, being the father of one beuatiful boy and another on the way ( a Girl) really made him wake up and smell the coffee, he realized that he did not want to be caught up in all that danger in the streets and bringing it home. So I thank god that he realized his Family was the most important in his life. Another factor was Eric Perrodin, Eric if you can read this, I am the waitress at Georgies Restaurant on Artesia in the city of Long Beach, I was a teenager at the time I remember you in the gang unit and you and your partners came in for dinner avery night, I can't remember your partner's name but he was handsome caucasian blue eyes, I know you know who Im talking about, anyway, Eric, you picked up my husband off the streets more that once during that time and brought him home to me and would ask me not to let him go around that area you were patrolling, and tell him how dangerous the streets were, and Eric I have to thank you, for doing that, because of that we are still a Family, we have 3 kids together 2 boys and 1 girl, and averytime we hear or see your picture on the billboards, the paper or the news we tell the story to our children and they too know who you are, We were so pleased to learn that you were elected as a mayor for the City of Compton. I have not had the privilidge of seeing you in person again or thanking you in person but you were a dedicated man to your duty and you meant business, but you also had a good heart and helped who you knew needed advice and guidance. Thanks a lot!! Maria and Family.
