As I was pulling off the back lot of CPD, I got my first radio call of a vehicle stripping in-progress. Being that I was completing my Training at the time and this was my first day on the watch, I was more than eager to get this
call and catch these guys to prove myself among the hard worker dedicated CPD Officers. As I turned onto the 500 block of West Peach Street, I parked my patrol car down the street from the actual location so I could creep up on the suspects. Just as I begun my approach, I was spotted by a look out, I heard "one time" and that's when it all started. Then I got to the driveway of the location (5) suspects saw me, dropped their tools and started running and hopping over fences eastbound Peach Street. I put out over the radio, "1A2, I'm in foot pursuit of (5) suspects Etc..etc.." Of course I had no idea where I was, but I was right on these guys. Then I
heard over the radio loud and clear as if an angel was looking over me, "Break Break Break...Junior is in footpursuit of (5) M/B/A's (he was putting out a perfect broadcast of my pursuit as if he was the one running after these guys). I remember thinking where the hell is J.J. to be putting out this broadcast and there he was. I was just coming over about the fourth fence, I saw J.J. standing in a weaver (gun shooting stance) with his 44 magnum revolver pointed at all (5) suspects who were lying face down shaking like leaves with J.J. barking orders at them like they were the Charlie coming out of the jungle. J.J. turned to me and said, "Junior get behind me, so these DUDES CAN HANDCUFF THEMSELVES. J.J. threw handcuffs at each suspect and order them to handcuff themselves, as he continued to stand in that weaver stance with that big 44 pointing in their
direction. I was gasping for breath and just trying to keep up with J.J.  J.J. took all (5) into custody and had them march in line to the back seat of my patrol car. Of course J.J. lectured me on my tactics and then praised me for my efforts. At the station he bragged to everyone on how well of a job I did and took no credit for stopping those guys. It sure was a good feeling seeing J.J. on the other side of that fence and having such a great Officer on my side. I will always remember J.J. for that day and all his words of wisdom. I still patrol Compton as a LASD/Deputy proud of my training from CPD Officers such as J.J. and will never forget my memories of such a dedicated Officer. I know J. J. is in a better place and will be looking over us all...
God bless J.J.

I have a very heavy heart this morning because of the passing of a
Compton PD legend. When "War Story" time comes around I'm always compelled to tell one or two that include JJ. The Beach Cops that I work with (ok I know I'm one now too!) believe I make this stuff up, but they didn't know him.

I remember a huge biceped Training Officer with a baritone voice when I first walked through the doors of the Hub in 1981. I could not help being intimidated by his presence. But after getting to know him I found that his sensitivity was as large as those arms.

DISPATCH: 1Adam respond to a gang fight involving chains and knives - stand by for your back up. JJ: 1A, we don't need no back up. They have knives, we have GUNS!

Good bye JJ
9-13 to 10-19 and God Speed.
